Update on Ontario Girl Mauled by Rottweilers: Neighbors Had Complained About Dogs

The scene outside a rural Niagara home where a girl was mauled by at least one Rottweiler yesterday afternoon.

Pelham, Ontario - A 5-year-old girl was mauled by at least one Rottweiler as she played with puppies in a barn yesterday afternoon.  The family owned several Rottweilers and Beagles, and it’s not clear yet how many dogs were involved in the attack.  Of the dogs, Niagara Regional Police Detective Constable Richard Gauthier said  there were “too many to list. You’re dealing with large dogs and a small child.”

The girl was critically injured and taken to Welland County General Hospital, and later flown by air ambulance to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  She remains in critical condition.

Welland & District Humane Society workers took three Rottweilers into custody, but left the Beagles.

It’s believed that a female Rottweiler had attacked the girl to protect its puppies when the girl started to play with them.  The girl had been playing with the dogs unsupervised.

Because if you have a pack of known vicious breed dogs you should always leave a small child with them unattended. When will people start using some common sense? Never I guess.

A dog, especially a rottweiler, may defend its puppies like a bear defends its cubs. I have seen a rottweiler with its young and if there had not been a gate between us, I think it would have killed me on the spot (and I’m an adult). I would never keep a rottweiler in my home. It seems that the parents supervised neither the dogs nor the children. What a horrible tragedy.

Let us not forget that the parents are also traumatized by this unsuspecting accident and will need our prayers as their little girl undergoes any necessary surgical procedures. I can only plead with animal lovers to be vigilent with kids around your pets. A dog can attack even those he knows without provocation.

absolutly the parents fault this happened and in no way is it the dogs fault.
